The term "egress" means to go or leave out. Egress windows and window well openings are specifically designed to be large enough for an adult person to climb in or out of in case of an emergency. United States building codes require every bedroom of a home to have an egress window, emergency exit window. To be clear, all bedrooms means sleeping rooms in an unfinished basement and regular bedrooms in a basement. To qualify as an egress window, the window must be placed in specific locations in a dwelling, must meet specific size requirements, providing an adequate source of exterior ventilation.

An Egress window well opening has certain dimensions required by US building codes. The concept is to allow the rescue window opening to be fully opened and to have the well area dimensions to accommodate a firefighter to climb in or out. The "floor area," (the place where you can stand) requires a space of 9 square feet and a minimum of 36 inches wide and length. In addition, it must contain a permanently affixed ladder or steps for climbing out for window well depth exceeding 44 inches in depth. When a ladder is essential, the ladder must be at least 12 inches wide and project no less than 3 inches from the window well itself. Please note, it can't be obstructed by the open window or infringe on the window well more than 6 inches.
If your home was built with the egress window located under a porch or deck, the code requires at least 48 inches between the top of the window well and the bottom of the deck or porch joists.
